"A Skills Survey carried out in 1995 identified a real unemployment rate of nearly 40%"

Haggerston is a Council ward in Hackney with significant numbers of residents who are Council/Housing Association tenants. The population is very diverse with large minorities of people of African and Turkish origin. A Skills Survey carried out in 1995 identified a real unemployment rate of nearly 40%. The needs of the area have been recognised in that it is receiving Government urban regeneration funding and is part of European funded programmes, in particular the Heart of the East End Urban Initiative.

Following the survey, Dalston City Partnership (DCP), the local City Challenge company, funded a large extension to the local Haggerston Community Centre including a 22 place Nursery, training rooms and a computer suite. DCP funding also included environmental works and a Community Development Worker but this funding finished at the end of March 1998.
