Haggerston Community Centre Home

The Tenants Association campaigned to build a community centre for the estate. In 1983 the Greater London Council (GLC), constructed the community centre and funded the Tenants Association. Following the abolition of the GLC, funding was taken over by the London Borough of Hackney. Various community groups were encouraged to use the centre and numerous programmes were initiated, such as a play group for under fives and foreign language classes . In August 1989 an arson attack closed the building for six months. The Tenants Association took the full responsibility of redecorating the community centre. Hosting the national office of the Defend Council Housing organisation.
