Haggerston Community Centre Home

Residents in the area formed Estate Development Management Committees (EDMCs) several years ago. This coincided with the announcement that Hackney Council’s Estate Regeneration Strategy would include the Kingsland, Haggerston and Whitmore estates. The EDMCs worked on the behalf of residents to secure the best deal for the estates, prior to the residents’ transfer ballot in 1999. They negotiated with the Council and the proposed new landlord on matters affecting residents, for instance, renewal and refurbishment plans, fair housing management policies and rent guarantees.

After the ballot in 1999, the Whitmore and Haggerston (East) estates and 37-78 Bryant Court were transferred to Canalside Housing Partnership and the individual estate committees joined to form a single body, the Canalside EDMC.

The Canalside Housing Partnership consults with the EDMC on

  • Plans for renewal and refurbishment of homes
  • Design issues
  • Housing management policies (such as decanting, transfers, rent arrears, estate standards and equal opportunities)
  • Repairs and maintenance service
  • Economic regeneration activities

Volunteer residents (both tenants and leaseholders) are elected to the EDMC annually and meetings are held once per month. All residents can attend meetings and are eligible to be voted in as members if they wish. Turkish translation is available if required. Meetings are on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7.00 pm.
